One Label, Two Completely Different Ideas
The phrase lie detector hides a fork in the road. Down one path is the polygraph, invented in the 1920s: continuous recording of breathing, cardiovascular activity and sweat response while questions are asked, on the theory that deception produces more physiological arousal than truth-telling. Down the other is EEG-based recognition testing, built on decades of brain research: recording the brain’s electrical activity and looking for the involuntary response it produces when it encounters information it recognises.
The difference in approach is fundamental. The polygraph asks an indirect question - is this person aroused, and can an examiner infer why - and depends on that inference. Recognition testing asks a narrower one - does this brain recognise these specific details - and measures the response. Most of the practical differences in this comparison, from nerves to scoring, flow from that distinction, and so do the limits of each.

What the Traditional Method Does Well and Badly
Give the polygraph its due. A disciplined single-issue examination, run by a trained examiner with questions agreed word for word, performs well in the practitioner literature: the American Polygraph Association's 2011 meta-analysis reports roughly 87-89% accuracy for validated single-issue techniques. For most of a century it was the only practical instrument in existence. Its procedures are mature, its examiner training is standardised, and its pre-test consultation discipline - the single-issue rule, the agreed-question rule - is genuinely excellent practice that any method benefits from.
Its limits follow from what it measures. Because it records arousal, it cannot by itself distinguish the stress of lying from the stress of being suspected, so an honest but anxious subject is at documented risk of a false positive - the concern the independent literature returns to most consistently. Because the subject has some control over the signals being compared, motivated subjects can attempt countermeasures; examiners are trained to detect them, and the research treats them as a genuine limitation. And because charts are scored by an examiner, using numerical scoring systems, borderline cases carry some examiner variability.
The 2003 US National Academy of Sciences review set out the independent position: for specific-incident testing, laboratory accuracy well above chance but well below perfection; field evidence weaker; and the method poorly suited to screening. Practitioners and the NAS disagree on how high the figure is, but both agree that question design and examiner competence matter a great deal.

What Recognition Testing Changes
EEG recognition testing descends from one of the most-studied phenomena in brain science: the event-related potential literature, which established decades ago that the brain produces a characteristic involuntary electrical response - roughly three hundred milliseconds after a stimulus - when it encounters something meaningful or recognised. Recognition-based protocols apply that finding to lie detection: details connected to the matter under investigation are presented among plausible neutral alternatives while sensors record the brain’s response to each.
The logic is concealed-information logic rather than accusation logic. The test does not ask are you lying and hunt for stress; it asks does your brain react to the true details differently from the decoys - something only a person who knows those details can do. Controlled laboratory studies of the concealed information test typically report 80-95% correct classification, with limited field validation so far. Those are published figures about the method, not results from our own testing. The method's properties speak to two of the polygraph's documented limitations, though not without limits of its own.
Nerves: nervousness raises heart rate and sweating, which is why it can affect a polygraph chart, but it does not by itself make a brain recognise information it has never seen, so an anxious but honest subject is not penalised for being anxious. Scoring: the analysis is a statistical comparison of recorded responses to case details against neutral items rather than an examiner's reading of a chart. Countermeasures: the response occurs within a fraction of a second, but the method is not immune - Rosenfeld and colleagues showed in 2004 that the original protocol could be defeated by trained countermeasures, and later protocols were designed to detect or resist them. Resistance depends on the protocol used. The method also needs specific case details that an innocent person would not know; where there are none, a direct did-you-do-it polygraph question may be the better fit.

Read the table with a caveat in each direction. The polygraph's practitioner figure comes from validated single-issue techniques run to standard; the independent review puts it lower and notes weaker field evidence. Recognition testing's figures come from controlled laboratory studies and have less field validation behind them. The practical summary: for an anxious but honest subject, a recognition test removes the nerves problem. For a case with specific known details, it tests something a polygraph cannot. For a case with no such details, or where a direct did-you-do-it question is what you need, a polygraph examination may be the better fit.
What Each Session Is Actually Like
The lived experience differs more than people expect. A polygraph session means a blood-pressure cuff on your arm, respiration tubes around your chest, electrodes on your fingers, an instruction to sit still, and a structured question format that includes the relevant accusatory questions. A professional examiner runs it calmly, but for an anxious subject the setup itself can add to the arousal being measured. Then a stress-based method exposes them to a false-fail risk that a recognition method does not. Are there specific details of what happened that only an involved person would know? Then a recognition test has something concrete to work with; if there are none, a polygraph's direct question may suit better. Do you need a result both sides will accept afterwards?
