Help Us Test Our EEG Equipment
We are looking for adults across the UK to take part in short test sessions. You wear a soft EEG cap, watch words on a screen and press a key. Your session helps us check how well our equipment and software perform.
What Is Involved
A session from start to finish.
- You sign up below. We ask for your name, the area you live in, when you are usually free and how to reach you. Signing up does not commit you to anything.
- We contact you when we are testing near you. We plan sessions area by area, so it may be a little while before you hear from us. Payment for your time is agreed at this point.
- You read and sign a consent form. It explains what is recorded and how the recording is used. You can stop at any point during the session.
- The cap is fitted. It is a soft fabric cap with four small sensors and two ear clips. A little gel under each sensor helps the contact. Nothing is passed into the body.
- You do the task. Words appear on a screen roughly every two seconds. You press one key for a word you have been told to look out for and another key for everything else. You may be asked beforehand to pick or memorise an item, so we can check whether the equipment picks it out.
- That is it. The cap comes off, the gel washes out with water, and we thank you for your time.
Why We Need Volunteers
Equipment that measures brain responses has to be checked on many different people, not a handful. Hair, head shape, age and attention all affect an EEG recording. Each volunteer session adds to the evidence on how our equipment performs, including when it gets things wrong, and that is how we improve it.

Questions and Answers
What people ask before signing up.
What will I be asked to do?
You sit at a table wearing a soft fabric EEG cap with four small sensors, watch words appear on a screen one at a time, and press one of two keys. Before the session you may be asked to pick or memorise an item, such as a name or a town, so that we can check whether the equipment picks it out.
Is it safe?
Yes. EEG sensors only record the tiny electrical signals already present at the scalp. Nothing is passed into the body. A small amount of conductive gel is used under each sensor and washes out with water.
How long does a session take?
Around 60 to 90 minutes, including fitting the cap, checking the signal and two or three short recording blocks with rests between them.
Will I be paid?
Any payment for your time is discussed with you individually before a session is booked, and it varies by location.
Where do sessions take place?
At your home or at a private local venue, depending on where you live and what suits you. Signing up tells us where volunteers are, so that we can plan sessions area by area.
Will I be asked personal or accusing questions?
No. Validation sessions use neutral material such as names, towns or objects. You are not being tested about anything you have done.
What happens to my details and my recording?
Your sign-up details are used only to contact you about volunteering. Before any session you are given a consent form explaining how the recording is used. You can ask us to remove your details at any time by emailing info@deceptiondetection.co.uk.
Who can volunteer?
Adults aged 18 or over who can read short words on a screen and sit reasonably still for a few minutes at a time. Signing up does not commit you to anything.
